In a dramatic escalation of U.S.-Mexico tensions, the United States has charged the sitting Governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, along with nine other current and former high-ranking Mexican officials, with conspiring with the powerful Sinaloa Cartel to smuggle massive quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine into the United States.

The indictment, unsealed in Manhattan federal court, accuses the officials , many from Mexico’s ruling Morena party  of providing protection to the cartel’s “Chapitos” faction in exchange for bribes and political support, including alleged assistance in kidnapping and intimidating political rivals to help Rocha Moya secure the governorship in 2021.

Rocha Moya, 76, who has led Sinaloa since November 2021, faces charges including narcotics importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and additional conspiracy counts.

If convicted, he could face life in prison or a mandatory minimum of 40 years. He has strongly denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated attacks on Mexican sovereignty.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called the charges potentially political and said her government will investigate them.

Again, Mexican authorities are now reviewing evidence for possible extradition requests, setting the stage for a complex, high-stakes international legal battle.
