20-year-old Muhammad Shanzeb Kahn is expected to be extradited from Canada to New York to face serious terrorism charges after being accused of conspiring to pull off a terrorist plot targeting Jewish groups in Brooklyn. The suspect was identified by the U.S. Justice Department after being declared wanted by the FBI.
The suspect, also known by his alias “Shahzeb Jadoon,” is accused of traveling to Canada from Pakistan on a student visa in May of 2023. According to investigators, it’s unclear whether the suspect ever attended school as he was supposed to as part of the conditions of getting a visa. Instead, he is accused of immediately immersing himself in a dark world of criminal terrorism. By November of 2023, the FBI was already monitoring the suspect after he was flagged for publicly expressing sympathy for the Islamic terrorist group ISIS.
While watching the suspect and his behavior, FBI agents quickly uncovered a disturbing plot. Kahn was reportedly planning to commit an attack in the name of ISIS against “as many Jewish people as possible,” on October 7th. Even worse, he wasn’t alone in his schemes. He had enlisted a group of co-conspirators who were all prepared to do their part to commit the atrocity.
According to the federal criminal complaint, the suspect stated that they hoped the attack would go down in history as the “largest US attack since 9/11.”
He was arrested in Quebec on September 4th. At the time, he was only 12 miles away from the US border and it was about one month before the planned attack. The suspect also had a pocketful of cash. The FBI believes that the suspect was planning to meet up with a smuggler to help him get across the Canada-US border.
If the suspect is convicted, then he faces up to 20 years in prison.
Are You Facing International Charges?
While the United States was the country seeking to investigate and apprehend the suspect, Canadian authorities worked with America to arrest him. The county is expected to fully cooperate and extradite him to the US shortly.
Extradition is the process of transporting a prisoner from one country to another in order for that suspect to face criminal charges. Many countries have extradition treaties between each other, but not all countries cooperate with each other when it comes to prisoner exchanges. For instance, the U.S. does not have extradition treaties with China, Russia, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Cuba, or the UAE.
If you’ve been accused of committing a crime in a foreign country, then it’s imperative to quickly get informed regarding your rights and options. Facing charges in another country means that your rights as an American could be impacted. You may not be treated in the same way as you would in an American prison.
